Decide how much shape you want
A barrel leg curves outward before narrowing toward the ankle. The outline can look quite different from a straight leg, even when both pairs fit at the waist. If this is your first pair, compare a front and side photograph with jeans you already wear. A familiar waist measurement alone will not tell you how the extra room through the thigh will feel.
Rise and fabric make this a real comparison
Quince names Bella as its high rise barrel jean, while the Free People pair is explicitly mid rise. The Everlane choice is a utility pant rather than another denim wash. Decide which of those differences you actually want before comparing prices. Do not buy the smallest waist that closes simply to control the silhouette; use the size chart and check the hip and rise measurements.
Try the hem with your actual shoes
A curved trouser leg can bunch awkwardly over a shoe when the inseam is too long. Try your usual flats, loafers or boots with the garment indoors before removing tags.
