THE MOUNTAIN EDIT · 2026/27

Epic Pass,
explained.

What the Epic Pass is, which version fits your trip, and how to make the whole ski holiday work better.

One family weekend. A few days out West. Or a season spent chasing the next run. Start with your plans, then choose your pass.

01 / START HERE

It opens the lifts.
Not the whole trip.

Epic is a family of advance-purchase ski and snowboard access products from Vail Resorts. Depending on the version, you buy season-long access or a set number of ski days at a defined collection of mountains. It is not one universal ticket with identical access everywhere.

Think of the pass as one line in your travel budget. Accommodation, flights, transfers, equipment and lessons usually remain separate. The useful question is not “Which pass has the most resorts?” It is “Which one covers our actual mountain, dates and ski days?”

01

Mountain

Check the exact resort, not just the region.

02

Dates

Holiday access can change the answer.

03

Ski days

Count time on snow, not nights away.

04

Each person

Age tiers and individual plans matter.

Who is it for?

These are planning profiles, not sales demographics. A repeat local skier can compare regional access. A traveler taking several mountain trips may value a wider network. A family tied to school holidays should put restricted dates first. A beginner planning one visit should compare a lesson package and lift ticket before committing to a season pass. There is no reason to buy a larger product simply because someone else does.

02 / MAKE IT YOURS

Find your starting point.

Three choices to narrow the research. Then confirm the exact product with Epic.

YOUR STARTING POINT

Choose the mountain before the pass.

Make a shortlist of resorts and actual ski dates first. A pass with more destinations is only useful when it covers the places you will visit.

Start with the official resort access list, then compare products.

See the comparison ↓

Editorial planning tool for the named destinations, not a checkout quote or confirmation of eligibility. It does not compare every regional pass or current ticket price.

03 / THE THREE MAIN ROUTES

Same season.
Different ways in.

We have left prices live at Epic. They vary by age and configuration, and the checkout selector could not be independently verified during research.

01

THE WIDEST FLEXIBILITY

Epic Pass

Frequent trips. Big destinations. Peak-date plans.

The flagship season pass gives unlimited access at its listed owned-and-operated resorts, including Vail, Park City and Whistler Blackcomb. Partner destinations have their own day limits and conditions.

Why consider it
A strong starting point when dates are fixed around school holidays or several destination trips.
The tradeoff
You can pay for access you never use. A short trip or narrower regional pass may be more sensible.

No restricted peak dates on the flagship pass; partner conditions still matter.

Official pass comparison ↗
02

REPEAT DAYS, WITH RULES

Epic Local Pass

Regular skiing with a flexible resort-and-date plan.

Local is a multi-resort season pass, not just a pass for residents. Breckenridge and Keystone are among its unrestricted options. Other mountains have peak-date restrictions or a day cap.

Why consider it
Worth comparing when the mountains you will actually use fit its access rules.
The tradeoff
Vail, Beaver Creek and Whistler share ten total days outside restricted dates, not ten days each.

Check every destination. Park City, Stowe and several Tahoe resorts have restricted peak dates.

Official pass comparison ↗
03

A KNOWN NUMBER OF DAYS

Epic Day Pass

One short trip, or 1–7 planned ski days.

Build a pass around your total ski days, the resort group and whether peak dates are included. Days need not be consecutive. It is an advance-purchase product, not an ordinary same-day lift ticket.

Why consider it
A focused option when you know how many days you will ski and which mountains must be covered.
The tradeoff
The wrong resort group or restricted-date option can leave your itinerary outside the pass.

Select the exact configuration. Certain partner access requires an All Resort 4–7-day product.

Other passes and age tiers worth comparing+

Northeast Value & Midweek

A regional product may fit repeated eastern trips better than a larger network. Midweek excludes weekends. Check Stowe day caps and restrictions separately. Compare children’s options rather than assuming one regional product fits every age.

Young adults & children

The 2026/27 Epic and Local lineup has age-based tiers, including young adults 18–30. Young adult pricing is not the same as proving college enrollment. Check the age rule on the exact product; do not assume a child rides on an adult’s pass.

Military & adaptive

Separate products have defined eligibility, documentation and access rules. Military partner access differs from the flagship Epic Pass. Confirm the exact category rather than assuming that a shared name means identical benefits.

04 / BEYOND THE LIFT

The perks are useful.
The details make them useful.

Epic Mountain Rewards is included with the main Epic, Local and Day products. It is a set of eligible discounts, not an all-inclusive trip.

20%

Food & drink

At participating on-mountain outlets, on eligible spend up to $150 per day. Alcohol and many village restaurants are excluded.

20%

Eligible lodging

A discount on eligible rates at participating properties. Compare the final total, cancellation terms and location with other available offers.

20%

Group lessons

Applies to eligible group ski and ride lessons. Private and specialty lessons are excluded; lift access may be a separate purchase.

20%

Equipment rentals

Eligible rentals at participating locations. My Epic Gear membership and damage waivers are excluded. Confirm the exact rental offer.

UP TO 50%

Epic Friend Tickets

Eligible season passes offer discounted tickets for friends: 50% off window tickets for guests 13+ and 25% off child tickets, ages 5–12 at most resorts. Epic Day Pass is excluded.

CHECK FIRST

Summer & other extras

Some eligible passes include scenic lift access in the associated summer season. The 2026/27 page describes summer 2026, not guaranteed summer 2027 benefits.

05 / BUILD THE TRIP AROUND A PLACE

Where the pass
becomes a holiday.

Destination inspiration with access notes. Photographs illustrate the places, not the snow, availability or experience you will receive.

For a Colorado base.

Compare Breckenridge and nearby Keystone when planning your ski days. Local includes both without the standard peak restrictions. Choose your base by lesson meeting point and transfer convenience, not only by a hotel’s nightly rate.

For a bigger mountain trip.

Full Epic and Local are different decisions here: Local’s Whistler days share the combined ten-day allowance with Vail and Beaver Creek and exclude restricted dates. Confirm the itinerary before booking international travel.

For a partner-resort adventure.

A Japan trip needs its own access check. Do not assume Day Pass works like full Epic or Local. Compare the specific partner allowance, redemption process, travel dates and ground transport before buying flights.

THE PARTNER RULE TO REMEMBER

“Included” does not always mean the same thing.

Telluride is excluded from Epic Local. Eligible All Resort 4–7-day products use their purchased days there, rather than receiving extra free days. A physical Epic card is required; My Epic Mobile Pass does not work at Telluride. Confirm the resort’s current rules directly.

06 / THE FAMILY PLAN

Make the morning easier.
Before you leave home.

Five people do not need five identical plans.

In a family of two adults and three children, one adult might ski every day while another takes a rest day. Younger children may need shorter sessions. Build the lift-access decision person by person, including age eligibility and realistic time on snow. Lessons and rental packages may have separate lift-ticket requirements.

For a Northern Virginia starting point, Liberty, Roundtop and Whitetail are useful mountains to research for repeat visits. Compare a regional pass against a Day Pass and any lesson bundle before paying for western access you will not use. We have not assigned a universal “best” pass to families.

The three checks that save friction.

  1. Individual access. Each rider needs a pass or valid ticket. One phone cannot scan the whole family; arrange compatible personal devices or physical cards.
  2. The lesson booking. Confirm age group, ability level, meeting point, lift access, equipment and lunch inclusions. Do not assume a pass buys a lesson.
  3. The arrival buffer. Allow time for parking, boots, rental fittings and bathroom stops. Follow the resort’s recommended arrival time, especially on weekends.

Arithmetic only. Excludes taxes, booking fees, lodging, transport, lessons and equipment. If age tiers differ, calculate each person separately. Compare against the same family’s actual advance-ticket total; a pass is not automatically the cheaper choice.

07 / PLAN THE REST OF IT

A better ski trip is
more than a pass.

01

Book the bottleneck first.

If a child’s lesson is essential, check availability before committing to nonrefundable travel. Reserve the appropriate ability group. Being able to ride a lift does not mean a beginner is ready for every run.

02

Compare the door-to-snow cost.

Add airport transfers or car rental, parking, baggage and the trip from your lodging to the lesson base. A farther-away room can create a harder morning. Check current parking reservations and shuttle timetables with the resort.

03

Make equipment a decision.

Compare rental collection locations and fitting times, not only the headline price. Bring suitable layers, gloves and eye protection. Have equipment fitted by the rental team; a fashion packing guide does not replace technical safety advice.

04

Leave room for weather and rest.

A ski-day plan should allow slower mornings, tired children and changing operations. Check the resort’s live weather, terrain openings and safety guidance. Historic photographs and a pass purchase are not a guarantee of snow or open lifts.

BEFORE YOU CONFIRM

Epic Coverage is not whole-trip insurance.

Eligible passes include a conditional refund policy for specified qualifying personal events and resort closures. It does not reimburse personal medical expenses or make flights and hotels refundable. Passes are generally nonrefundable and nontransferable outside the applicable terms. Review coverage elections, exclusions and claim deadlines, plus each separate booking’s cancellation policy.

08 / THE USEFUL QUESTIONS

Before the first chairlift.

Is Epic Local only for people who live nearby?+

No. Its name describes a pass product, not a general residency requirement. What matters is whether its named resorts, peak dates and day allowances fit your itinerary.

Can one family share a pass or scan from one phone?+

No shared pass. Each skier needs individual lift access. My Epic does not allow one phone to scan multiple family members’ passes. Use each person’s own compatible device or arrange physical cards.

Do I need to reserve ski days?+

The official Pass Holder FAQ says there is no general ski-day reservation system this season. Partner access and redemption rules still need checking. Lessons, parking, rentals and hotels are separate reservations.

Are the days on Epic Day Pass consecutive?+

They do not have to be consecutive. You are buying a selected total number of ski days within the product’s resort and date rules, rather than a fixed run of hotel nights.

Are lessons, ski equipment and hotels included?+

No. The pass is primarily lift access. Eligible discounts may reduce separate purchases, but they do not turn the trip into an all-inclusive package. Check exactly what any lesson or lodging package includes.

Does Epic Coverage refund a disappointing snow trip?+

Do not assume that. It is a conditional pass refund policy for defined qualifying events and closures, not a snow guarantee or general travel insurance. Read the current terms, election requirements and claim deadlines.

When should I buy, and what about renewal?+

Compare while the relevant pass is still on sale; do not assume it will be available when you arrive. Review whether Auto Renew is selected in your account or checkout, and read the future-season charging terms.
