Choose the weight before the stripe

A lightweight shirt is useful under a close overshirt or knit. A heavier jersey has more presence worn by itself, but can crowd the sleeves of a fitted jacket. Do not assume two cotton shirts have the same feel or structure. Check the specific product description, then compare its measurements with your preferred base layer.

Change the contrast, change the outfit

Dark and light stripes create a sharper graphic effect beside black trousers. A softer oatmeal and white combination makes a quieter partner for washed denim or olive outerwear. Navy stripes with cream trousers can feel polished without adding tailoring. Keep the hem intentional: try a small front tuck if the shirt obscures the trouser shape.
