What to look for

Fabric percentage is one useful detail. Fit, layering room, closure and the way you use a coat still decide its value.

How we chose these pieces

HOW WE COMPARED

Research comparison based on exact US retailer listings checked October 22, 2026. Shopfest has not worn or independently tested these products. Pros and cons compare listed features, format, price and likely wardrobe or routine use; brand performance claims remain attributed. Prices exclude tax and shipping.

Trend context: recent fashion-editor coverage supports the style direction, not the claim that each exact item is currently viral. Targeted TikTok, Instagram and Reddit searches did not yield usable recent direct evidence. This is an unranked comparison; existing Shopfest scores are preserved.

Our editorial standard →
Quiet luxury is most useful as a buying question

Current relaxed-tailoring coverage gives restrained outerwear a seasonal context. The useful question is whether a coat improves the outfits you repeat, rather than whether it looks expensive online. The COS listing identifies an earlier collection, so we do not call it a new 2026 launch simply because it suits this autumn’s styling.

TOTEME: pay attention to the sleeves

The $1,220 navy wool-felt coat at NET-A-PORTER is listed as 100% wool with a loose shape and cape-effect sleeves. Those proportions are a reason to consider this particular coat, not incidental details. Check how the sleeve works over your normal knitwear, whether the volume suits you and whether the listed size is still available; the verified snapshot showed limited selection.

COS: a longer black alternative, not identical construction

COS’s $429 Double-Faced Wool Long Coat uses a listed 60% wool and 40% lyocell blend. It has a regular fit, button closure and lapels that can fold up; the size-S back length is 43.50 inches. That gives a specific long black silhouette at $791 less. The composition is different from TOTEME’s, and we cannot infer equal warmth or longevity from the double-faced description.

Evaluate ownership, not only the tag

Try sitting, reaching and carrying your usual bag with a coat fastened. Compare shoulder position and sleeve room, then read care instructions and return terms. COS lists dry cleaning. Neither a wool percentage nor a price establishes performance in wind or rain, and this research is not a temperature-rating test. Avoid budgeting around an October sale that has already ended.

Try the coat over your real winter layers

A coat needs enough room for the knitwear or jacket you expect to wear underneath it. Compare the shoulder, sleeve and closure with those layers in place, then consider whether you prefer the chosen navy or black in the rest of your wardrobe. The composition and construction listed by each retailer matter more than the broad quiet luxury label.

Neither a premium brand nor a wool percentage proves warmth for your climate. We have not tested wind resistance, insulation or long term pilling. Think about your commute, cleaning needs and discretionary budget. COS is a lower priced route to its own silhouette; TOTEME is a design choice to justify on its own terms. Neither purchase is necessary if your current coat already meets those needs.

THE SHOPFEST DECISION

What we would choose—and why.

Choose COS if its long black silhouette and blend suit your actual wardrobe and you want the lower outlay. Consider TOTEME for its particular navy wool and cape-sleeve proportion, with a fit you can verify. Neither purchase becomes worthwhile purely because it belongs to a quiet-luxury mood.
