Our verdict starts at the rise
Choose the Levi’s 501 ’90s when you want a looser straight leg and a mid rise. Start with Gap if you want a higher waist and a slimmer line through the hip and thigh. If you want more width all the way down, the Zara wide leg pair is a different option rather than a supposed copy.
The selected Levi’s black wash was $69.98, Gap’s medium blue $53 and Zara’s blue wide leg $59.90. These are three different colors and fits. A lower checkout price does not tell you whether the jeans will solve the same wardrobe problem.
The internet does not agree on Gap fit
In her August 2026 PureWow jeans guide, Stephanie Meraz found the ’90s Slim Straight uncomfortable through the waist and thigh. Other editorial coverage has been more positive about the cut. Treat that disagreement as a reason to try the fit, not as evidence that either writer must be wrong.
The PureWow description also refers to a low rise feel, while the current selected Gap listing is explicitly high rise. We therefore use the retailer’s product specification to identify this pair and keep the review as individual fit context. We do not silently turn the writer’s experience into a measured rise for this SKU.
A little stretch does not guarantee a forgiving fit
Gap lists a low stretch blend for the selected wash: 83% cotton, 11% polyester, 5% recycled cotton and 1% stretch. The way those fibers are woven and the garment is cut still matter. Measure the waist and thigh of a pair you like, and compare the retailer’s measurements where available.
Levi’s describes the selected 501 ’90s as loose through the leg. That is a design choice to enjoy rather than automatically correct with a smaller size. Size only after checking how the waistband and seat feel together.
Test the complete outline
Try sitting, climbing a step and bending before removing the tags. Then wear the shoes you actually plan to use. The same inseam can hang differently over a low sneaker and a boot. If alterations are needed, include them in the total price.
Check the exact wash before ordering. Different washes under a single fit name can use different fabric blends. A review of blue denim should not be treated as a fabric test of a black pair simply because both say 501 or ’90s.
