THE SHOPFEST TAKE
Start with what matters to you.
Choose Uniqlo for a plain merino layer and H&M for an oversized patterned statement. The prices are effectively tied; material preference, skin comfort and room under your coat matter more.

Almost the same price, two different jobs
The recorded gap is nine cents: $49.90 for Uniqlo and $49.99 for H&M. Choose Uniqlo when you want a plain knit that can sit under a jacket without making the outfit about the sweater. Choose H&M when you want pattern and volume to lead. The lower ticket price is not a meaningful reason to choose one here.
Both can earn a place in a wardrobe, but they are not substitutes for the same visual effect. Start with a real outfit you need to wear next week and work backward from its proportions.
Read the fabric label before the styling photo
Uniqlo lists 19.5 micron extra fine merino and a 100% wool composition for its selected sweater. H&M identifies the argyle knit as a polyester, acrylic, wool and spandex blend. These facts explain why comparing them only as two sweaters misses the decision. They do not prove that one will last a particular number of wears.
A Women’s Health merino guide describes the Uniqlo option as a thinner knit to consider if you run hot. That is a published reviewer’s assessment, not a temperature rating. We have not tested either garment for warmth, shrinkage or pilling.
Fit it beneath the outer layer you actually wear
A roomy sweater may look relaxed alone and feel crowded under a narrow sleeve. Try the argyle knit with your winter coat before committing to the size. For the regular fit merino, check that a shirt beneath it does not pull at the upper arm or show unwanted seams.
Look at the hem with trousers and skirts. A tuck should feel comfortable rather than becoming a bundle at the waist. The same labeled size across brands does not guarantee the same garment measurements.
Care and value belong in the verdict
Uniqlo recommends a mesh laundry bag, gentle washing and shaping the item to dry. Follow the current label on either knit rather than a general rule for all sweaters. If wool irritates your skin, the natural fiber percentage is not by itself a reason to buy it.
Choose a color and shape that repeats the clothes you reach for. The best value is a knit you enjoy wearing at its actual maintenance level. Neither brand name establishes that a product is disposable or permanent.
