THE DETAIL / 01

The verdict: low simplicity or a stronger outline

Choose Old Skool if you want a low shoe that sits beneath almost any casual trouser hem. Choose Chuck 70 if its higher canvas shaft and off white sole are the details you enjoy. At the recorded prices, Converse costs $20 more. That difference is easiest to justify when you specifically want the Chuck 70 construction and outline.

This is not a review of every Vans or Converse model. The standard Old Skool is different from a Skate or Premium edition, and Chuck 70 is different from a basic Chuck Taylor All Star. Keep the exact name in view when comparing offers.

THE DETAIL / 02

What the reviews support

RunRepeat’s August 2026 Old Skool review found the upper durable and the shoe flexible, while cautioning that its cushioning was not the strongest choice for a full day of walking or standing. It also flagged outsole durability. Those findings are more useful than a general claim that skate shoes are automatically comfortable.

Converse’s own listing identifies heavy canvas and OrthoLite cushioning for Chuck 70. That is a construction specification, not an independent finding that it beats Vans in a walking test. We did not perform that test.

THE DETAIL / 03

Check the fit with your everyday socks

Look at the heel hold in Old Skool and the pressure around the ankle in Chuck 70. Walk, sit and bend the shoe while it is still clean and returnable. Follow the brand’s current size guidance instead of using a universal rule for all sneakers.

If you use an insole, check the available interior volume before assuming it will fit. A slim looking shoe and a high top can both create pressure in unexpected places. Styling photographs cannot answer those questions.

THE DETAIL / 04

How we would style each

Old Skool gives a straight jean or wide trouser a quiet casual finish. Chuck 70 works when you want a visible high top with a cropped hem or a deliberate break over the shaft. Start with your usual hem length, then decide whether the shoe improves it.

Both rely on a casual materials story. They should not be treated as rain boots because their sole looks substantial. Choose footwear suited to the weather and the length of the day, then use these classics where they make sense.
